We recently launched the online catalogue for the current Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts exhibit Urban Alchemy: Gordon Matta-Clark. This site serves as a permanent archive of the exhibition and how it relates to the space designed by Tadao Ando. TOKY designed and developed the site, outdoor pole banners, and some promotional materials for the event.

October 2009
For the promotion of the upcoming opening of Urban Alchemy/Gordon Matta-Clark, TOKY helped the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts implement a guerrilla marketing campaign, printing advertisements on scraps of debris (ceiling tiles, drywall, wood, wallpaper, etc.) and scattered them around St. Louis. Printing was done by the hands of our friends at the Pulitzer, which were printed at a local print shop, All Along Press.
The opening for the exhibition is this Friday, October 30th from 5-9pm. (more info/rsvp)

Rachel ( from the Pulitzer) holds up a sample.

Amy ( from the Pulitzer) testing out the screen.

The invite placed amongst the media.

The Annual Conference for the Association of Midwest Museums is coming up in St. Paul, Minnesota. Eric will be speaking at this event in a joint presentation with Rachel Gagnon Craft, Communications and Web Manager at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts.
The topic of the presentation is below, and check back following the event for a recap!
Inside Out: Building Broader Audiences Through Public Curation
This presentation will focus on how the curatorial process a part of public dialogue through online documentation. We will discuss details of public-facing blog building, collaborations with artists and institutions, community engagement, staffing and training issues, and how websites can be re-imagined to become the nexus point for information.

For nearly every photo shoot, there is a light test. Sometimes the test itself makes for an interesting photograph. This was captured while documenting “Former Prisoners Perform at the Pulitzer”. See this and other accidental images at Light-Test.com

We’ve just been notified that two web sites we’ve designed for the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis — Dan Flavin: Constructed Light & The Light Project — are to be included in the AIGA National Awards for 2009! The category for our winning selection – Educational and Nonprofit: Non-ecommerce sites.
“365: AIGA Annual Design Competitions” make a definitive statement on the quality of communication design in North America this year. The survey of selections is published in AIGA’s online design archives; published in a book that is distributed as an authoritative chronicle of current design; and exhibited in AIGA’s New York gallery on Fifth Avenue.
This competition extends a legacy that began more than 90 years ago and is widely recognized as the most selective statement on design excellence today.

Recent reviews regarding the Old Masters at the Pulitzer Web site launched weeks ago:
“The Pulitzer is currently showing Ideal (Dis-)Placements, Old Masters at the Pulitzer. It’s been up since October and it’s received rave reviews. The Pulitzer has just launched the show’s website. No one does single-shows-in-space websites better than the Pulitzer (witness: Dan Flavin, Water) and I wouldn’t miss a one of ‘em.”
Tyler Green, Modern Art Notes
”The show has been up since October…but it is now accompanied by a fascinating, elegant and in many ways exemplary online catalogue… This show — perhaps even more than most — needs to be experienced in the space and light of the real world. But the website offers its own richly involving experience, balancing looking, listening, reading — and looking again.”
John Wyver, Illuminations
The exhibition is currently running through June 20th, so don’t miss this before it is gone forever. More information on the exhibit can be found at the Old Masters Web site or the exhibition site at Pulitzerarts.org

The Dan Flavin: Constructed Light Web site for the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts is a Webby Honoree in the Art Category. Out of the nearly 10,000 entries submitted to the 13th Annual Webby Awards, less than 15% are awarded the status of Official Honorees.
This makes for the 5th Webby Honoree we’ve received in the last 4 consecutive years.

There is a great article with video posted at the St. Louis Beacon covering ‘Staging Old Masters: Former Prisoners Perform at the Pulitzer‘.
Staging Old Masters is an innovative program of art exploration featuring short theatrical performances by former prisoners and homeless veterans on themes related to paintings and drawings currently on loan from the St.Louis Art Museum and Harvard Art Museum. The performances are free and open to the public, but the audience is limited to 15 participants.

TOKY has nine logos in Quayside Publishing’s book “Really Good Logos Explained“, each with nice write-ups about each logo from judges Margo Chase, Rian Hughes, Ron Miriello and Alex White.

Of the 9 logos included, a logo we did for the Pulitzer Foundation’s WATER exhibit was given a Judge’s Choice Award.
“The swirl of ink used here to connote water has the grace of a sume-i character and is integrated beautifully with the industrial sans-serif caps—Din is one of my favorites. The designer resisted the urge to clean things up and left random splatters and blobs that enhance the feeling of artistic authenticity.”
Judge Margo Chase
