New Work: “Reflections of the Buddha” Web Catalogue for the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts

TOKY is proud to have designed and developed every one of the exhibition web catalogues for the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, from Ideal [Dis-]Placements to Stylus and everything in between.

This week saw the launch of the full web catalogue for Reflections of the Buddha, its current exhibition of 22 artworks presented in harmony with the Pulitzer’s building, designed by Pritzker-winning architect Tadao Andō. Like all Pulitzer exhibitions, Reflections of the Buddha (the installation and the curatorial commentary) considers the relationship between the artworks and the architecture. The relationship may be even more pronounced in this exhibition, with organizing curator Francesca Herndon-Consagra exploring what happens when centuries-old Buddhist objects are installed in a contemporary building designed by someone who, while not a Buddhist, has been influenced by the Buddhist structures and philosophy of his native Japan.

Here’s a look at a few pages of the site:

New this catalogue: TOKY helped the PFA present audio — from Pulitzer staff and outside scholars — to accompany and more fully introduce specific artworks. Visitors to the above page, for example, can click through various points of view of the artwork with the audio (at left) playing continuously.

Pulitzer staff have ongoing, easy access to the blog for continual updates.

The exhibition is on view until March 10. While we like the website, we certainly recommend you see the show yourself, if you can, during an upcoming Wednesday or Saturday.

Ann Hamilton Stylus, Catalogue Site for the Pulitzer is Live

The latest catalogue site for the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts is now live. Stylus was created to specifically work within the Tadao Ando designed space, and is on display through January 22, 2011. An excerpt from the Introduction:

“In the Pulitzer’s short history, Ann Hamilton’s stylus breaks new ground in so many ways: it is our first commissioned installation in the building and the first multi-sensory exploration of Tadao Ando’s architecture. Ann’s artistic intervention extends into the urban fabric of St. Louis and permeates all our institutional activities, from programming, to catalogue, to web.”

The website archives the exhibition’s relationship with the space through photographs, video, sound, and time-lapse photography, much of which was shot by TOKY. We worked hand-in-hand with Ann Hamilton, over many months, to create a rich and unique online archive. The home page features full-screen video which randomly pulls from several captured clips from the exhibit.

In addition to the catalogue being a representation of the exhibition, the site also is a collaborative piece to the experience itself. Visitors to the site can create a concordance and contribute their reading by phone to be included in the sound projected from the outside walls of the Pulitzer.

Urban Alchemy / Gordon Matta-Clark Web Catalogue

We recently launched the online catalogue for the current Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts exhibit Urban Alchemy: Gordon Matta-Clark. This site serves as a permanent archive of the exhibition and how it relates to the space designed by Tadao Ando. TOKY designed and developed the site, outdoor pole banners, and some promotional materials for the event.

Urban Alchemy Screenprinting

For the promotion of the upcoming opening of Urban Alchemy/Gordon Matta-Clark, TOKY helped the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts implement a guerrilla marketing campaign, printing advertisements on scraps of debris (ceiling tiles, drywall, wood, wallpaper, etc.) and scattered them around St. Louis. Printing was done by the hands of our friends at the Pulitzer, which were printed at a local print shop, All Along Press.

The opening for the exhibition is this Friday, October 30th from 5-9pm. (more info/rsvp)

Pulitzer Light Test

For nearly every photo shoot, there is a light test. Sometimes the test itself makes for an interesting photograph. This was captured while documenting “Former Prisoners Perform at the Pulitzer”.  See this and other accidental images at Light-Test.com

Two Sites to be Included in Upcoming AIGA National Design Annual and Exhibit

Dan Flavin & The Light Project

We’ve just been notified that two web sites we’ve designed for the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis — Dan Flavin: Constructed Light & The Light Project — are to be included in the AIGA National Awards for 2009! The category for our winning selection – Educational and Nonprofit: Non-ecommerce sites.

“365: AIGA Annual Design Competitions” make a definitive statement on the quality of communication design in North America this year. The survey of selections is published in AIGA’s online design archives; published in a book that is distributed as an authoritative chronicle of current design; and exhibited in AIGA’s New York gallery on Fifth Avenue.

This competition extends a legacy that began more than 90 years ago and is widely recognized as the most selective statement on design excellence today.

Reviews are in for Ideal (Dis-)Placements, Old Masters at the Pulitzer Web Site

Recent reviews regarding the Old Masters at the Pulitzer Web site launched weeks ago:

“The Pulitzer is currently showing Ideal (Dis-)Placements, Old Masters at the Pulitzer. It’s been up since October and it’s received rave reviews. The Pulitzer has just launched the show’s website. No one does single-shows-in-space websites better than the Pulitzer (witness: Dan Flavin, Water) and I wouldn’t miss a one of ‘em.”
Tyler Green, Modern Art Notes

”The show has been up since October…but it is now accompanied by a fascinating, elegant and in many ways exemplary online catalogue… This show — perhaps even more than most — needs to be experienced in the space and light of the real world. But the website offers its own richly involving experience, balancing looking, listening, reading — and looking again.”
John Wyver, Illuminations

The exhibition is currently running through June 20th, so don’t miss this before it is gone forever. More information on the exhibit can be found at the Old Masters Web site or the exhibition site at Pulitzerarts.org
